What is a Truck Brake Shoe?

Truck Brake Shoe is a key component in the drum braking system of trucks, typically composed of a metal shoe frame and friction material (brake shoe lining) fixed on it. Its core function is to generate braking force through friction with the brake drum, thereby decelerating or stopping the truck. When the driver depresses the brake pedal, the brake cylinder pushes the brake shoe outward to closely fit the inner wall of the brake drum, consuming the vehicle's kinetic energy through friction to achieve braking.
Where is the Truck Brake Shoe Installed?
The brake shoe is installed in the wheel braking system of the truck, with the specific positions as follows:
1. Inside the Brake Drum
The brake shoes are installed on the brake backplate in pairs (left and right brake shoes), entirely enclosed by the brake drum. The brake drum is fixedly connected to the wheel hub and rotates with the wheel, while the brake shoes are fixed on the axle and belong to non-rotating components.
2. Distribution by Axles
Each wheel's inner side on the front axle, rear axle, or middle-rear axle (depending on the vehicle type) is equipped with a brake drum and brake shoe assembly. For example, common heavy-duty trucks usually install drum braking systems on both the driving axle (rear axle) and steering axle (front axle), so brake shoes are distributed inside the brake drums of all wheels.
Comparison with Disc Brakes (Expansion)
  • Drum Braking: Centered on brake shoes and brake drums, it features a compact structure and low manufacturing cost, commonly used in heavy vehicles like trucks. However, it has poor heat dissipation, and prolonged braking is prone to thermal fade.
  • Disc Braking: Using brake discs and brake pads, it has good heat dissipation and fast braking response, mostly applied to the front wheels of cars or trucks, but with higher costs.
Understanding the structure and installation position of brake shoes can provide a more intuitive grasp of the braking principle of trucks, facilitating subsequent maintenance and fault troubleshooting.
