Choosing the right trailer axle is one of the most important decisions for any fleet or trailer builder. The two most common designs on the market are German-style and American-style axles, and they are not interchangeable.

German-style axles

• Disc brake ready: German-style axles are typically paired with disc brakes, offering better heat dissipation and consistent braking on long descents.
• Standardized fittings: used widely across Europe, with standardized axle end fittings and brake mountings.
• Load ratings: commonly available in 10t, 12t, 13t and higher ratings.

American-style axles

• Drum brake based: traditionally use drum brakes, which are simple, robust and inexpensive to service.
• Spindle design: the American spindle system is different from the European one — parts are not compatible.
• Payload flexibility: available in lightweight designs for higher payloads and heavy-duty ratings such as 20t and 25t.

How to decide

Match the axle to the brake system and trailer type you operate. If your trailers run European-style disc brakes, choose a German-style axle; if you run a drum-brake fleet with American running gear, choose the American style. Check the axle load rating against your maximum gross weight, and verify the track width and bolt pattern.
